George William Frederick Charles was a grandson of George III. For 39 years he was Commander-in-Chief of the Army and opposed any kind of military reform.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859)









       

Chief Engineer of the Great Western Railway. Brunel was also the designer of ocean-going steamships (The Great Eastern and The Great Britain) and builder of 25 railways (notably the broad gauge Great Western Railway), 125 railway bridges, eight seaside piers and five suspension bridges.

Writer and editor. Thackeray first made his mark in 1844 with Barry Lyndon. In 1848, his masterpiece, Vanity Fair was published; Pendennis, Esmond and The Newcomes followed. His mother became insane and he himself drank himself to death.
